Origin

Mint is a perennial plant and weed whose origins are uncertain. What is known, is that even ancient Egyptians used to grow it. The name mint supposedly comes from the myth of a nymph called Minte, one of Hades’ concubinenes who was killed by the god’s wife. The myth claims that she was turned into a fragrant plant of mint.

For its fresh and intense taste, mint is used to flavour salads, vegetables and desserts. In British culinary traditions mint is used to prepare a sauce for roast lamb. In North Africa is used to prepare a fresh and sweet tea. In patisseries is often combined with chocolate or fresh fruit. Mint is also a fundamental ingredient for infusions while in summer, something really refreshing is mint “granita” (something like ice).

Did you know that

Mint is so versatile that can be also used outside the kitchen: mixed with essential oils and burned or used to decorate or to leave a pleasant smell around the house.
