Origin

Oats are a herbaceous plant that produce a cereal full of health benefits. Their origins are unknown but theories suggest they may have come from India, China or Egypt. Today the biggest producer is Russia. However, they’re also widely used in food products in England and Italy, especially for breakfast. Porridge or oatmeal is probably the best example.

Cook It

Until few years ago oats were mainly used to feed animals. Oats can be eaten either whole or in flakes. The flakes are obtained by drying the grains and then pressing them with rollers. Oats are an extremely versatile ingredient used for both sweet and savory recipes. Oat flakes are used to prepare muesli (a typical Swiss-German recipe for breakfast made with oats, dried fruit and nuts), cereal bars, cakes and you can find them in the typical English recipe for porridge. They are also used to enrich soups. Oats can also be minced and then processed into flour. Oat flour is used in recipes for cookies and bread. But that’s not it… you can also make oat milk!

Did You Know That

Whisky is made from distilled oats. It’s first aged in oak barrels for a few years and then distributed in many countries who sell the product directly.
