Origin

Orange is a round juicy and sweet fruit that comes from the orange tree – Citrus Sinensis – original from China. It is not clear how and why this fruit came to Europe, because traces of it can be found in Trinacria since romans time. Maybe because, thanks to the Silk Route, arrived during hte XIV century thanks to portuguese sailors. This would also explain why napolitan traditions call the orange ‘o purtuallo (the portuguese). In sunny Sicily, now a day are available many varieties of this fruit.

Cook It

With its many varieties, oranges are a perfect ingredient for both sweet and savory dishes. Bitter oranges, are perfect for savory dishes such as duck à l’orange or simply added to a salad. Varieties such as the Sanguinello (or tarot) are perfect to prepare cakes and also to prepare cocktails. You can eat them raw as oranges used to make juices, with a thin peel and juicy hearth, or as the oranges with a much more fleshy peel.

Did you Know that

Cumberland sauce is an english speciality and is made with oranges. This sauce contributed to the propagation of the fact that english people “eat meat with marmelade”. This sauce has a sweetish taste that combines very well with all kind of meat.
