Rice

Cook rice with green tea! Classic dish, new taste!

Origin

Rice arrived in the western world when Alexander the Great invaded Asia. There it used to grow like a wild plant. As rice plants tend to grow in damp and wet areas, floods used to be perfect catalyst to spread this kind of plant around the continent. Prehistoric men, after observing this incredible phenomenon, began to grow rice. In Italy, the first rice fields dates back to the fifteenth century, in Lombardy and then extended to the entire Po valley. Initially rice was considered a spice and was used for therapeutic purposes rather than as food.

Cook It

In Italy, rice is mainly used to prepare main rishes or salads. A sicilian speciality are “Arancini”: balls or cones of rice stuffed with meat sauce and peas or ham and mozzarella cheese. These are then covered in breadcrumbs and fried. In Asia, rice is often served as a side dish, simply boiled or steamed, whereas in India it is flavoured with spices or meat or vegetable curries. In India, rice is also cooked in milk and spices and served as a dessert.
