Origin

This year, the delectable Mugello chestnut is celebrating 20 years with IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) status. This unique product embodies the unmistakable flavor of its territory of origin – the area of Mugello in the province of Florence. The spread of chestnut trees in the Mugello area dates back to the Roman era, but it was during Medieval times that they really began to gain importance. Production continued to grow steadily until the 1950s, and they were once such a staple for the local population that they became known as the ‘bread tree’. After a period of decline in popularity, they began regaining momentum in the 1980s.

Chestnuts are a vital part of the local economy around Mugello, also known for IGP flour, as well as the wider region of the Tuscan Apennines, where 4 other goods with a DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) or IGP status are produced.
