Origin

The melon from Mantua is an Italian variety, with the IGP label. The fruit has its origins in Middle and western Asia. The melon in Italy has been cultivated for more than 2000 years as we can see from some paintings in Ercolano, and it was particularly appreciated during the renaissance at the signori’s court. It seems that the duke Francesco Gonzaga particularly appreciated the melons of its area, the ones from Mantua! In the province of Mantua there are 2300 hl dedicated to this fruit and they can be picked from June to August.

Cookit

There are two varieties of this melon: the first one, the most common one, is the one with reticulated rind and the second one has a smooth rind. Generally, this melon has a sweet taste and an intense fragrance that make him perfect to be eaten during a happy hour or dessert. It is perfect to make marmalades or to eat it at lunch together with arugula, gorgonzola and prawns.

When bees pollinate melons flowers they make a honey with a delicate and particular taste. According to experts, besides being very rare, is one of the most refined on the market. Also, Cannavacciuolo, an Italian chef, is very passionate about this fruit, so much that he actually made it the protagonist of a showcooking and the recipes have been recommended by the cooking school “Peccati di Gola”.
