Pistachio

With its semi-opened shell, pistachio is the only smiling fruit.

Origin

Pistachio trees grow mainly in the Middle East and have always been considered a luxurious food for centuries. In Persia, a region occupied by Iran today, pistachio trade and cultivation were considered to be a status symbol of wealth. According to a legend, pistachios were very appreciated by teh Queen of Sheba who bought all pistachios of that area for herself and her court. Pistachios from Bronte, a DOP product, are particularly famous and present in many sicilian recipes.

Pistachio is one of those fruits that you can always add to many different dishes, sweet or savoury, from appetizers to desserts. It is ideal to prepare sauces, as an ingredient for exotic plates and is fundamenteal to make the sicilian cannolo. Bronte’s pistachio is rich and unique in its taste. Is great blended or grated on pasta or desserts. Pistachio pesto, when combined with savoury ricotta make a great dish of sicilian tradition.

Did you know that

Fresh pistachios can be recognized by their weight: if the pistachio is heavy, it means it’s fresh. The older the pistachio, teh lesser the weight. Pistachios can be stored up to six months preferably in a closed can and in a dark and dry place. It is perfect to eat it to satisfy your belly and since it is full of properties it makes you feel full.
