Chives

Origin

China was the original birthplace of chives, providing the perfect habitat with the right humidity and fresh soil. Already around about 4,000 years ago, they quickly spread through Europe as well. The Celts called them “allium” which meant acidic, or strong. German tradition attributes magical powers to them: just rub yourself with the stems of some chives to keep away the evil eye and protect yourself from the evil gnomes of the Black Forest. It’s a versatile plant that can be found all across Italy, from the maritime coasts to mountains at altitudes up to 1,000-1,200 meters. They’re happy both in a pot or the ground, and aren’t afraid of frost or extreme heat. In the winter, the part above ground might disappear completely, but will come back from March on. They thrive both in direct sunlight and the shade.

Perfect to replace onion, Chives is perfect to give an extra taste to sauces, soups, butter, eggs, omelettes, savory cakes, cheeses and salads. It can be placed as a decoration in your plates or used as a string.

Did you know that

Thanks to its aroma, it is used for therapeutical purposes like digestive, antiseptic, and hardner. The best way to beenfit from all its properies is to eat it grinded, even by replacing salt, to fee its nutrient properties.
