Origin

Tomato is originally from South America, especially from Chile, Peru and Ecuador and it arrived in Europe during the XVI century thanks to the Spanish colonization. Tomato didn’t spread immediately in Europe and at the beginning the plant was used to decorate, especially in France and UK, where they were given to women as a sign of appreciation of their beauty. Only after the XVIII century tomatoes became popular as ingredients, especially in Spain and Naples, leader during the XIX century in the canning industry and creator of the tasty match of pasta with tomatoes sauce. The harvesting time goes from June till September.

Cook It

It is incredibly versatile – used both in its raw state and also cooked. It is usually eaten raw in salads and cooked to prepare sauces. It can also be used to give some color to any plate. There are many varieties of tomatoes, each has its purpose: San Marzano is used to make sauces, pachino is ideal for juices and concentrates. But the list is much much longer!

Did You Know That?

Tomatoes were considered a sinful fruit, arrived from paradise to tempt men. Besides the fact that it is not like this anymore, in some languages there are still traces of this, of the fruit arrived from Eden, called by many love’s pome or paradise’s pome: tomato is called paradicsom in Hungarian, paradižnik in Slovenian, paradajz in Serbian and in Austrian is der Paradeiser.
