Origin

The bean plant, Phaseolus vulgaris, comes from Mexico while in Europe some varieties of this plant existed, with subsaharian origins, called Vigna. There are many different varieties of beans in the world, 500 more or less. In Italy there are many varieties too, different in every region.

Cook it

You can use them for fresh meals like salads with beans, onions, oil and salt. You can also use them also for main courses and soups. guaranteed that in Italy you cna find the traditional “pasta e fagioli”, pasta with beans and a bit of parsley. Mashed, they are very tasty on garlic bread or as a side dish.

Beans have always been considered the food of the poor, because they were the best substitute for meat. Truth is, that beans don’t have methionine, that is present in meat and fish. Anyhow, to truly benefit from this legume, you should eat them with cereals.
