Cherry

With the petioles you can make a purifying and draining herbal tea!

Origin

Cherries, a fruit that comes from the Rosacee family, can be found from the end of May till July. The origins can be traced in Asia Minor even if today they are present in all the continents, especially in Europe, where every year is produced the 75% of the worldwide harvest. In Italy, according to Plinius the elder, cherries were brought by general Lucullus, after he defeated Mithradates. That’s why cherries are often called “a Lucullian fruit”. Over the centuries, cherries have always been appreciated especially by Louis XIV of France, the Sun King, who truly loved the cherry tree, so much that he wanted people to eat cherries so he could plant more.

Cookit

Sweet cherries come from Prunus Avium, whilst black cherries and marasca cherry come from Prunus cerasus. Because of their sour taste, the latter variety is used to prepare syrups, marmalades and liquors like maraschino, cherry brandy and ratafià. But the incredible variety (more than 100..) makes cherry a very versatile ingredient, able to enrich any dish! In France, they prepare Clafoutis with cherries, a sweet dessert, easy to make and very fresh…but if you prefer savory dishes, then try chicken rolls with prosciutto and cherries! Roll them up, sauté and enjoy a fresh dinner!

Cherries have diuretic properties and reduce the acidity level in your urine, so they’re perfect for a detox diet. The juice has revitalizing properties for the skin and it is also a fruit full of fibers and with very low calories. And careful…never throw away the pits! Use them as filling in a cloth. During the winter, warmed up, they are perfect to alleviate joint pain and during the summer, put them in the freezer and use them to reduce swelling.
