Origin

Mandarin is a fruit that comes from China and Indo-China. Its cultivation was introduced in Europe during the XIX century. All citruses derive from 3 main species: cedar, pomelo and mandarin, that differenciate from the other two because it is very sweet. The fruit has a spherical shape and it’s very easy to pick up. The flesh, very sweet and light orange colored it’s made of slices very easy to separate. The peel, thin and very scented has a much darker orange color if compared to the flesh.

Cook it

Mandarines are eaten just as they are, but they are also very good caramelized or in a jam. From the peel, people extract a very scented essential oil, that is also the biological father of Mannarinu, a very famous sicilian liquor.

Mandarin essential oil is an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, making it ideal to cure abrasions and scraps. Moreover, thanks to its astringent properties it is used a lot for relaxing massages.
