Sugar

Quick snack? Bread, oil and sprinkle some sugar!

Origin

Alexander the Great stated in 325 b.C. “like honey, but it does not need bees”, later, arabs spread and dominated its use. Cane sugar was the first kind of sugar to be grown by men; the Holy Roman Emperor Frederik II introduced sugar in Italy, and spread its cultivation in Sicily. Sugar remained for a long time a rare and expansive delicacy, affordable onyl by rich people. Nowadays, sugar is extracted from canes and beetroots, with very different processes.

Cook it

Used mostly as a sweetner, sugar can also be mized with water and cooked to create syrups, caramel or fondant. Sugar can also be transformed into a candy to nibble on.

Did you Know that

While undergoing refinement processes, sugar is stripped of its nutrients. It is bleached and treated until it acquires the traditional white color and extremely sweet taste, very different from the original product.
